MEXICO CITY: Criminal groups created new synthetic drugs that simulate the effects of marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine, and are threatening to smuggle them into Mexico, experts denounced today.
Benjamin Garcia, expert in treating addictions at the clinic Monte Fenix, highlighted that being made from legal chemical substances, are not prohibited, but are incredibly more toxic than traditional drugs.
He said the well-known bath salts have already caused serious health problems in the United States.
Garcia also said those substances, made using chemical formulae, have proliferated in the present decade and are among the 40 new drugs recognized by the United Nations Organization. He warned that Mexico is on time to prevent that those drugs are smuggled into the national territory, although it is a huge challenge, because the organized crime has found ways to evade the law.
