HAVANA: A citizen of Cuba is facing prison time after admitting she stole the credit and debit card numbers of innocent people and created new counterfeit credit and debit cards.
Claudia Diaz Diaz, 22, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Richard J. Arcara to conspiracy to commit bank fraud.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell T. Ippolito Jr. said the defendant fraudulently obtained the credit and debit card numbers of 79 actual accounts and then encoded that information on counterfeit cards. She then used the counterfeit cards to buy merchandise at a Tops Market, CVS Pharmacy and other local retailers.
Five other Cuban nationals also are charged in the case. Her guilty plea is the result of an investigation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Secret Service and State Police.
