Custom Court sends cell phones’ smuggler on physical remand

KARACHI: Custom Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has sent a suspect, Waqas Iqbal, on physical remand till November 28, 2016 who was allegedly involved in smuggling of 103 mobile phones worth Rs 5.652 million.

During the hearing, investigation officer produced the suspect before the court and informed that the staff of the anti-smuggling department intercepted him at Karachi airport on November 20, 2016, and recovered 103 mobile phones from his possession.

The investigation officer further informed the court that iPhone-6, Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime, Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime, Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime, Samsung Galaxy J1 Mini Prime, iPhone-6S, iPhone-7, Samsung Galaxy C7, Samsung Galaxy A9, Samsung Galaxy A86, Samsung Galaxy A36, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, BlackBerry D TEK, Samsung Galaxy TAB A and Samsung TAB E are included in these mobile phones.

The officer pleaded the court may grant physical remand of the above named accused person for further investigation, therefore, the court sent the accused to the custom department on physical remand.

According to the prosecution, after all formalities, the said phones were seized and accused was taken into the custody. A case No P-1397/2016 was registered by complainant Miraz Shoaib Feroz, senior preventive officer on violation of section 2 (s) and 16 of the Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (9) of Section 156 (i) ibid read with baggage rules notified vide SRO-666(1)/2006 dated June 28, 2006 & Section 3(III) of Import and Export (control) Act, 1950.
