LAREDO: Customs and Border Protection officers continue to be extra precautions as the summer travel season is in full swing. Officials say that in less than a week, two port runners have attempted to cross into the U.S. illegally. Both incidents happened at the Gateway to the Americas International Bridge through the pedestrian walkway, just three days apart from each other.
The first incident happened last Tuesday, when an officer noticed a 29-year-old man jumping the guardrail of the northbound walkway trying to avoid inspections. The second instance took place on Friday, when officers say a 25-year-old man was avoiding the pedestrian inspection booths, walking southbound toward heavy traffic and then ran northbound on Convent Street. During both incidents, the two men were quickly apprehended by police.
