MUMBAI: On the basis of specific intelligence, officers of the Mumbai airport customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) on Thursday intercepted six passengers arriving from Bangkok and seized 24 pieces of gold weighing 4.681 kilograms worth Rs 13.6 million.
The passengers identified as Varkha, Sanjay Ghosh, Dhian Das, Nishant Kumar, Dharam Malik and Surinder Kumar carried Indian passports and arrived in an Air India flight AI-33. The smugglers carried the gold in their body cavities and underwear. Another passenger, Jagjit Singh, was caught carrying Euro currency amounting to Rs 1.132 million.
“From the evidence collected so far there appears to be an effort to smuggle out seized goods,” a customs official said.
