According to a Customs official, the department took the step to recover Rs2 billion outstanding, adding that the Appraisement East is help of the local government for the confiscation of properties of the defaulting importers.

Before blocking the NTN numbers, the Customs Department obtained wealth statements from the respective regional tax offices (RTOs) of importers/companies/traders to identify the properties and bank accounts of their family members.

Customs Appraisement East has also served notices on several banks for not freezing accounts of the defaulters and directing them to issue bank statements of the last three months for scrutiny.
