Customs busts huge smuggling bid, seizes items worth Rs 70m

ISLAMABAD: The Customs Preventive in a joint operation with police made history by confiscating two containers loaded with smuggled goods worth Rs 70 million.

Islamabad Customs Collector Dr Arslan Subuctageen, following information, formed a team under the supervision of Superintendent Zargam Dil and Deputy Superintendent Rana Shakeel to foil the smuggling attempt.

The customs team with the assistance of Chakwal police intercepted two vehicles carrying containers near Balkasar and checked them. The officials recovered 339 sets of LET TVs, 179 air conditioners, auto parts, 4,000 cartons of cigarettes, 3,575 kilogram of bicycle parts, 1,600kg welding rods, 1,100kg polyester cloth, 58 indoor units and 44 outdoor units.

The persons accompanying the vehicles were asked to show documents regarding the legal import of the items but they remained fail to do the same; therefore, the recovered items were confiscated under the Customs Act, 1969.

During the actions, four persons were arrested whereas an FIR has been lodged against them.
