Customs Court admits challan of betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court approved interim charge sheet against suspects namely Ali Baksh son of Paendy Khan Baloch and Muhammad Hamid son of Haji Jumma Khan, who were involved in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 8410 kilograms betel nuts.

On June 26, 2019, investigation officer of customs preventive submitted interim charge sheet and informed the court that on an actionable information, customs team intercepted a Hino passenger bus “Sadabahar Coach” bearing registration no BSA-511 (Quetta) worth Rs4,000,000.

During the checking, customs officials found crushed betel nuts 8410 kgs worth Rs1766100, 1000 packets containing Safia brand Indian origin gutka 105000 pouches worth Rs2,100,000, 16 packets containing Rajnigandha brand gutka containing 800 pouches worth Rs16,000, 150 tins of Rajnigandha pan masala (tobacco) worth Rs37500, Parachute cloth 250 rolls weighing 1581 kgs valuing of Rs 1067175, 61 rolls of Sofa cloth weighing 183 kg worth Rs123535 and 6 tyres made in China worth Rs88200.

After the hearing, court approved charge sheet and fixed the case for regular hearing.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section 2 (s) (15) (16) of the Customs Act 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the Customs Act, 1969 further read with section 3 (1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
