LAHORE: The Special Federal Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling has approved a 14-day judicial remand of two accused held in a case of currency smuggling at the Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore.
A special team of the Customs Investigation and Prosecution presented the accused before the customs court and asked for their physical remand for five days to dig out real culprits behind the smuggling act. But the customs court approved their physical remand for three days. Their physical remand was completed on Friday. The Customs Investigation and Prosecution team again presented them before the court and asked for further physical remand but the court sent them to jail on judicial remand of 14 days. The court has also directed the investigation team to complete the investigation within the given time.
The Custom Department had thwarted a bid to smuggle a huge number of foreign currencies abroad and apprehended two culprits at the Lahore Airport.
Two accused were booked after the recovery of currency notes. During a baggage search of two Bangkok-bound passengers at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, $25000 was seized.
Meanwhile on Monday morning, an accused was also arrested in smuggling of gold. The court has also sent him to jail for 14 days.
According to details, the security personnel conducted a raid over the airport and recovered 1.5 kg gold worth millions of rupees from a passenger.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) gave the information of smuggling of gold by suspect Muhammad Riaz who was a resident of Gujrat.
The customs teams of investigation and prosecution had presented them before the court of customs taxation and anti-smuggling and asked for their physical remand that the court had approved for three days in currency and gold smuggling cases.
