Customs Court approves bail of suspect booked in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court granted interim bail to suspect namely Syed Muhammad Akbar son of Syed Khuda Nazar, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 15775 kilograms betel nuts.

On August 20, 2018, during the hearing, counsel for the accused appeared before the court and filed bail petition, he argued that his client is innocent and was falsely implicated in this case, how will appear before the court on each and date of hearing.

After hearing the arguments, court granted his bail against the surety of Rs2,00,000 and directed him to appear before the court on next date of hearing or otherwise.

On last date of hearing, Investigation Officer Muhammad Mehmood, and Naib Subedar of Pakistan Coast Guards produced the above mentioned suspect before the court along with first information report and informed that on a credible information, officials of the Pakistan Coast Guards intercepted a Hino truck bearing registration number TLS-913 and during the search, officials recovered 15775 kilogram betel nuts from the truck.

He submitted that on the spot, officials asked him to produce legal documents, however, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after the formalities, the said goods and truck were taken into custody along with accused.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against the above mentioned suspects for violation of law under Section 2 (s) and 16, 156 (1) (8) (89) and 157 of the Customs Act, 1969.
