Customs Court approves bail of suspect booked in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court granted after arrest bail to suspect namely Abdul Wali son of Amir Muhammad, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid betel nuts etc.

On 27 February 2020, investigation officer of Customs Collectorate Preventive ASO submitted charge sheet against the above mentioned suspect and informed that on an actionable information, customs officials intercepted one unit Hino truck trailer bearing registration no: TLT-569 and recovered 400 pp bags of betel nuts each containing 25 kg, total 10,000 kg worth Rs 8,000,000.

He said that during the checking, suspect was asked to produce lawful documents, however, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, court suspect was taken into custody and goods along with vehicle.

After the hearing, court approved charge sheet, during the hearing, court filed after arrest bail application and argued that he is ready to face trail, therefore, court may grant his bail till final judgment in this case.

After the arguments of both side, court granted against the surety against Rs100,000 and directed him to appear on next date of hearing or otherwise.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against them for violation of under section 2(3, 7) 2(9), 2(14) (a) 3,6,7,8 (1) (a) & (d) 8A ,22(1) and 73 of the sales tax act, 1990 punishable under section 33 (3) (5) (8) (11c) (13) (16) (18) ibid.
