Customs Court approves bail of suspect in gold and foreign currency smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court approved after arrest bail of suspect Muhammad Islam son of Muhammad Ishaque in a case of smuggling 04.4 kg gold, $450,000 and AED255 from Sukkur to Karachi.

On 22 January 2020, during the hearing, investigation officer of customs preventive submitted charge sheet against the above mentioned suspect and argued that on an actionable information, customs preventive intercepted two passengers namely Muhammad Islam and Anahita Irani daughter of Sohrab Jamshad Irani, who introduced themselves as owners of the cargo but could not provide any legal documents as to the reason of carrying huge amounts of USD and gold.

He further submitted that later the passengers stated that they were carrying this currency and the gold on behalf of Sheherzade Jewelers but did not provide any lawful documents.

Investigation officer said that during the search, customs officials found 04.4 kg old valuing to Rs50,000,000. $450,000 valuing in Rs69,907,500 and AED255 worth Rs10,787 and total worth Rs119,918,287.

After the hearing, court approved charge sheet, counsel for the accused person filed after arrest bail and court granted his bail against the surety of Rs100,000 and issued notices the customs department and special prosecutor for customs and called police papers, court also directed him to appear on next date of hearing without fail.
