Customs Court approves bail of suspects in contraband goods smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court granted bail to suspects namely Naseer Ahmed son of Ali Khan and Muhammad Irfan son of Sher Muhammad against the surety of Rs100,000, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle betel nuts, foreign origin tyres, Ajinomoto salt etc.

On 14 February 2020, during the hearing, counsel for the accused argued that their clients are innocent and have been falsely implicated in this case, therefore, court may grant their bail till final judgment in this case.

On last date of hearing, investigation officer of Customs Preventive Anti-Smuggling Organization (ASO) produced the above mentioned suspects and submitted that customs preventive intercepted one Hino truck/ trailer bearing registration no TMF-524 and during the search found monosodium glutamate bearing mark as Lindhua made in China total weighing 625 kg valuing of Rs193,750, 12 foreign origin Marshal Brand tyres valuing of Rs273,420. 5000 kg foreign origin betel nuts valuing of Rs4,000,000. One generator brand Cummins 30 KW, New made in China valuing of Rs593, 510. One betel nuts cutting machine valuing of Rs200,000 etc.

He submits that after the search, above mentioned suspects were asked to produce any documents, however, they failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after the formalities, they were arrested and goods also were seized by customs officials.
