Customs Court approves bail of suspects in whisky smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court granted bail to suspects namely Nabeela, Hamal Murad and Khalil Ahmed, who were booked in a case of smuggled 150 bottles of Johnnie Walker Black Label brand whisky.

On March 11, 2019, counsel for the above-mentioned suspects filed bail petition and argued that their clients are innocents and have been falsely implicated in this case, who are ready to face trail and will submit surety, therefore, court may grant their bail. After the hearing, court granted their bail against the surety of Rs200,000 and directed them to appear on next date of hearing along with their counsels.

According to the prosecution, on a credible information, customs team intercepted a Toyota Corolla car bearing registration no: AKM-458 model 2006 and recovered 150 bottles whisky each one liter and suspects were asked to produce any lawful documents, however, they claimed but did not produce any lawful documents, therefore, it was established that said whisky was brought into the country through unauthorized route without payment of duty and taxes leviable thereon, therefore, above-mentioned whisky and car were taken into custody and accused were also arrested.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation under section 6,7,22 of control of narcotics substances act, 1997 punishable under section 9 © of control of narcotics substance act, 1997 other related laws.
