Customs Court approves bail to suspect booked in tax evasion

KARACHI: The Customs Court granted interim pre-arrest bail to suspect namely Kamran son of Muhammad Anwar, who was booked in tax evasion case against the surety of Rs500,000.

On Monday, the above-mentioned suspect appeared before the court along with his counsel who moved pre-arrest bail petitions and argued that his client is innocent and was falsely been implicated in this case, who is ready to face trail; however, he has apprehension of arrest.

After the hearing, court granted him bail against the surety of Rs500,000 and issued notices to the customs department and investigation officer for next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, on a credible information, two consignments of polyester textured yarn & viscose filament twist yarn imported by M/s Saba International and cleared from Appraisement East Karachi by availing exemption under SRO 1125(1) 2011 were intercepted after clearance from port area and during the hearing, it was found that goods were wrongly cleared by the availing benefit of the unit was already suspended with effect from Oct 23, 2012 by the relevant sales tax authorities for lack of manufacturing facilities and mis appropriation of previously imported yarn.

Investigation further revealed that said importer also involving evasion of Rs822.61 million in the shape of inadmissible sales tax and WHT exemption/ concession availed said SRO which are also recoverable from it.
