Customs Court approves charge sheet against suspects in tobacco smuggling

KARACHI: The Customs Court approved charge sheet against suspects namely Mirza Aurangzain Baig son of Younus Baig and Muhammad Jawad son of Chand Hussain, who were involved in a case of attempting to smuggled non-duty paid tobacco worth Rs6,600,000.

On 14 March 2020, investigation officer of Anti-Smuggling Organization submitted charge sheet and informed the court that on an information was received of smuggled foreign origin tobacco is dumped in a godown situated at Gulshan-e-Shamim, Block 8 House No R/197 F.B Area Karachi and likely to be removed from that premises shortly.

He further informed that on pursuant to the said information a customs team was formed to foil the attempt on urgent basis, who reached there but no one came near godown in presence of customs team and during the search, customs team found 120 PP bags tobacco each containing 22 kg total 2640 kgs valuing of Rs. 6,600,000 and after the formalities, goods were seized by the customs officials.

After the hearing, court approved charge sheet and adjourned the case for regular hearing for next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against them for violation of under section 2(3, 7) 2(9), 2(14) (a) 3,6,7,8 (1) (a) & (d) 8 A , 22(1) and 73 of the sales tax act, 1990 punishable under section 33 (3) (5) (8) (11c) (13) (16) (18) ibid.
