Customs Court approves charge sheet in contraband goods smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court approved charge sheet against suspect namely Ghulam Qadir son of Abdul Khaliq, who was arrested in a case of attempting to smuggle contraband goods.

On 9 March 2020, investigation officer of Anti-Smuggling Organization submitted charge sheet before the court and informed that on actionable information, customs officials intercepted Bedford truck hearing registration number LES-09-4047 and during the search, recovered 280 pp bags of foreign origin betel nuts total weighing 8,000 kg worth Rs6,400,000.

He further submitted that during the search, accused was asked to produce lawful documents, however, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after the formalities, goods was seized along with vehicle and accused was also taken into custody.

After the hearing, court approved charge sheet and adjourned the hearing for regular hearing and copy supply, however, counsel for the accused moved an application for after arrest bail, court proceeded on bail application and issued notice to special prosecutor of customs department and called comments for next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against them for violation of under section 2(3, 7) 2(9), 2(14) (a) 3,6,7,8 (1) (a) & (d) 8A, 22(1) and 73 of the sales tax act, 1990 punishable under section 33 (3) (5) (8) (11c) (13) (16) (18) ibid.
