Customs Court approves judicial remand of accused in Ajinomoto smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Ghulam Qadir son of Muhammad Ishaq to Central Jail on judicial remand, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 10250 kgs monosodium glutamate Dabang brand Chinese salt Ajinomoto.

On April 19, 2019, investigation officer produced the above-mentioned suspect before the court and informed that on an actionable information, a team of customs department raided a M/s Doon Lite Godown situated at Plot No F-120, near Rafar Goods, SITE, Area, Karachi and recovered 410pp bags each weighing 25 kgs containing monosodium glutamate Dabang brand Chinese salt Ajinomoto made in China total 10250 kilograms with total value of Rs2,478,706.

He further argued that the above-mentioned goods are hazardous to health for which the apex court has imposed ban on the import and sale of mono sodium, Ajinomoto, therefore, the same has been seized under the cover of mushirname under Section 168 of the  Customs Act, 1969.

He submitted that prosecution has completed investigation from arrested suspect and if court may send him to jail then it has no objection. After the hearing, court sent him to jail and directed investigation officer to complete investigation and submit charge sheet on next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under Section 2 (s) 156, (2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses 8 & 89 of Section 156 (1) ibid read with Section 3 (i) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950
