Customs Court approves physical remand of two suspects in gold smuggling case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has sent suspects namely Adamjee son of Ghulam Muhammad and Sumaiya Adamjee wife of Adamjee to customs department on physical remand till October 6, 2017. They were booked for attempting to smuggle assorted gold jewellery 21K, weighing 1,338 grams worth Rs 5.55 million.

During the hearing, investigation officer produced the suspects before the court and informed that they were intercepted at Jinnah International Airport Karachi, after they came from Dubai via flight number FZ-331.

He further informed the court that during the search, officials of the customs authorities recovered assorted gold jewellery from them. They were asked to produce legal documents, but they failed to provide any lawful document, therefore, the customs officials arrested them and seized the gold jewellery.

Investigation officer said that prosecution needs further investigation from said suspects, therefore, court may sent them on physical remand, after his arguments, court sent back them to customs department and directed investigation officer to produce them before the court on next date of hearing along with progress report.

Case was registered for violation of under section 2 (s) 16 & 139 of the Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clause (8) (89) of (70) of section 155 (i) ibid, read with baggage rules notified vide SRO-666(1)/2006 dated 28/06/2006 & section 3(iii) of Import & Export (Control) Act 1950.
