Customs Court approves physical remand of ‘currency smuggler’

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspect namely Mustafa Arif Umer Issa son of Muhammad Arif Muhammad Umer holding British passport and was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle foreign currency to customs lock-up on physical remand.

On August 27, 2018, Preventive Officer Muhammad Asim Nawaz produced the above mentioned suspect before the court and informed that accused Mustafa Arif Umer Issa was suspected and intercepted, while he was leaving for Dubai by Emirates Flight No EK-603. He was asked to declare if he was carrying any contraband/prohibited goods including foreign currency.

He submitted that being dissatisfied, his baggage comprising one grey color soft traveling bag and two black hands trolley bags have been examined in presence of two witnesses.

He further informed the court that during the examination, customs officials found 146,465 UAE Dirham, 1,100,200 Malawi Kwacha, 5,050 South African Rands and total foreign currency tentative value was Rs4,966,371 that was seized.

He submitted that prosecution needs further investigation from him; therefore, court may grant his physical remand. After the hearing, court granted his remand and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of Section 2 (s) 16 and Section 139 of the Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (9) and (70) of Section 156 (i) ibid read with notification of State Bank of Pakistan No F.E-1/2015-SB dated 01/06/2015 complainant by Muhammad Asim Nawaz, Preventive officer of Customs Collectorate Preventive, Customs Office, Karachi.
