Customs Court approves physical remand of suspect in smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspects namely Ghulam Qadir son of Muhammad Ishaq to customs department on physical remand who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 10250 kilograms monosodium glutamate Dabang brand Chinese salt Ajinomoto.

On April 09, 2019, investigation officer produced the above-named suspect before the court and informed that on an actionable information, a team of customs department raided M/s Doon Lite Godown situated at Plot no F-120, near Rafar Goods, SITE, Area, Karachi and recovered 410 pp bags each weighing 25 kilograms containing monosodium glutamate Dabang brand Chinese salt Ajinomoto made in China total 10250 kilograms worth Rs2,478,706.

He further argued that the above mentioned goods is hazardous to health for which the apex court has imposed ban on the import and sale of monosodium, Ajinomoto, therefore, the same has been seized under the cover of mushirname under Section 168 of the Customs Act, 1969.

He submitted that prosecution needs further investigations from arrested suspect for arrest of other involved culprits, therefore, court may send him back to customs department on physical remand.

After the hearing, court sent him to customs department on physical remand and directed customs department to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under Section 2 (s) 156, (2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses 8 & 89 of Section 156 (1) ibid read with Section 3 (i) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
