Customs Court approves post arrest bail in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court granted post arrest bail to suspect namely Abdul Rasheed, who was confined in Central Jail Karachi and booked in a case of attempting to smuggled non-duty paid foreign origin betel nuts.

On 16 April 2020, counsel for the applicant moved post arrest bail application and argued that according to the first information report (FIR) during the checking of vehicle as in progress at Customs Choke at Moachko, RCD Highway, Karachi by the staff of customs as well as Rangers at par, where a passenger bus  Al-Maqqadar coach bearing registration no JB-0341 was stopped for checking and during the checking it was observed that 106 pp bags containing betel nuts were kept inside the passenger bus and baggage hold no passenger of the said bus claimed the ownership of these betel nuts.

He further argued that the occupant driver of the said bus later-on indentified as Abdul Rasheed could not identify the owner of these betel nuts, the betel nuts were off loaded from the said passenger bus and checked in presence of musheers and after the formalities, customs officials seized goods and accused also was taken into custody.

He argued that his client is innocent and has been falsely implicated in this case and no specific role has been described against his client.

He said that his client is ready to face trail, therefore, court may grant his bail till final judgment in this case.

After the hearing court granted his post arrest bail against the surety of Rs. 100,000 and directed him to appear before the court on next date of hearing without fail or otherwise.
