Customs Court approves remand of suspects booked in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspect namely Muhammad Hanif and Munir Ahmed, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 19950 kilograms betel nuts and other goods, to customs department on physical remand.

On November 15, 2018, investigation officer of Customs Preventive produced the above-mentioned suspects before the court along with First Information Report (FIR) and informed the court that on an actionable information that a Nissan trailer bearing registration no: TLN-996 loaded with non-duty paid betel nuts is arriving from Multan to Karachi via Super Highway, the team intercepted the trailer and searched the same.

He submitted that during the search, the team of customs department recovered 19,950 kilograms betel nuts valuing at Rs5,180,750 and during the raid, accused were asked to provide lawful documents, which they failed the produce; therefore, they were arrested and goods were also taken into custody.

He submitted that prosecution needs further investigation; therefore, the court may send them back to customs department. After hearing, the court sent them on physical remand and directed him to produce them on next date of hearing along with progress report.
