Customs Court approves remand of suspects in mobile phones smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling Court has sent suspects namely Abdul Rauf Tauqeer Raja, vigilance officer of M/s Gerry’s Dnata and Muhammad Aamir, to Customs Department on physical remand. They were booked for attempting to smuggle non-duty paid foreign origin mobile phones from Dubai to Karachi.

During the hearing, the investigation officer produced the suspects before the court and informed that a team of Anti-Smuggling Organization intercepted them at Jinnah International Airport Karachi who came from Dubai via Emirates Airline.

He informed the court that during the search, the customs officials recovered 8 Samsung Galaxy S7 mobile phones, 4 Samsung Galaxy Mobile Phones S7 edge, 8 Samsung Galaxy mobile phones Note 5 and other goods. They were asked to produce lawful documents of the goods, but they failed to produce any proof, therefore, all goods were seized and the suspects were arrested.

He submitted that prosecution needs further investigations, therefore, the court may send them back to the customs department.

The case was registered for under section 2 (s) 16 & 178 of the Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (9) & (89) of section 156 (i) ibid.
