Customs court awards 14 days imprisonment to three smugglers

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi awarded 14 days imprisonment along with Rs 300,000 fine each to accused namely Syed Nasir, Faisal Bin Suleman and Rashid Iqbal in a case of attempting to smuggle gold, foreign currency and mobile phones worth Rs 30 million to Dubai.

During the hearing, accused Syed Nasir, Faisal Bin Suleman and Rashid Iqbal filed applications for pleading guilty. Charged was framed to which they pleaded guilty and voluntarily place themselves at the mercy of the court. Therefore, the convicts had already been confined in judicial custody and were fined Rs 300,000 each.

On the last date of hearing, investigation officer produced Syed Nasir, Faisal Bin Suleman and Rashid Iqbal before the court and informed that a customs team recovered gold, foreign currency and mobile phones worth Rs 30 million from them.

The investigation officer further informed the court that total valuing of currency was Rs 17.2 million, total valuing of gold was Rs 13 million and total valuing of mobile phones was Rs 40,000.

He argued that the accused were trying to smuggle these goods without paying duty and taxes. Therefore, after all formalities, these goods were seized and accused were taken into custody.
