Customs Court awards 15 days imprisonment to suspect booked in smuggling case

KARACHI: Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi awarded 15 days imprisonment and Rs 200, 000 fine to a suspect, Waqas Siddiqui, who was booked in a case of mobile phones smuggling.

During the hearing, counsel for the both sides completed their final arguments and after the arguments, the court announced it order and observed that “keeping in view of arguments and taking the lenient view, the accused has already undergone for the period of confined in customs/ judicial custody and he should pay a fine of Rs 200, 000. If the fine is not paid, the accused shall suffer simple imprisonment for further two months”.

According to the prosecution, on March 3/03/2017 Muhammad Nadeem, preventive officer intercepted Waqas Siddiqui at international arrival hall of Karachi airport. The accused had arrived from Dubai by Flydubai Airlines flight no F2-333 and during the examination of his baggage, the customs authorities recovered non-duty paid mobile phones along with Panasonic camera, Galaxy kit, accessories of mobile phones, games, air condition switches etc.

After the formalities, a case was registered against him in violation of customs laws.
