Customs Court awards 20 days imprisonment to suspect in mobile phones smuggling case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi awarded 20 days imprisonment and Rs 100,000 fine to a suspect, Muhammad Asim, who was arrested while attempting to smuggle 114 mobile phones worth Rs 1.228 million.

In default of payment of the fine, accused will suffer simple imprisonment for further six months, the order said.

During the hearing, investigation officer produced the suspect before the court. The counsel for the accused moved an applicant for pleading guilty and left himself on the mercy of the court. After the hearing, the court awarded 20 days imprisonment and Rs 100,000 fine.

According to the prosecution, on a credible information officials of the custom department intercepted the above named accused person and during the examination of his bag recovered 114 contraband mobile phones which were comprising Samsung 36 Nos, Motorola 49 Nos, Huwewi 03 Nos, HTC 56 Nos and mobile phones batteries total valuing of Rs. 1, 228, 448/.

Case was registered complainant by senior preventive officer Karachi Muhammad Shafique in violation of section (s) and 16 of the custom act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (9) of section 156 (i)ibid, read with gannage rules notified vide SRO-666 (1)/2006 dated June 28, 2006 & section 3 (iii) of import & export (control) act, 1950.
