LAHORE: The Special Federal Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling has sent a suspect to jail for one year and also imposed a penalty of Rs 10 million on him in 28 kilogram gold smuggling case.

Muhammad Imran Nawaz was arrested by the customs authorities from Allama Iqbal international airport red handed while making an attempt to smuggle a huge quantity of gold to Dubai.

The lawyers of the suspects, during hearing of the case, argued that he was arrested from airport with gold but there is no proof that he was making attempt to smuggle that gold to Dubai. The Pakistan Customs had registered a fake case against him. On the other hand, the customs consul argued that he was caught red handed with a huge quantity of gold. The court after hearing both sides reserved the verdict and announced it on Monday. Customs judge Tahir Sabir sent him to jail for one year and imposed a penalty of Rs 10 million.

Customs had seized the recovered gold and foreign currency of worth approximately Rs 130 million and lodged FIR on the arrested accused in charges of smuggling and money laundering in 2010.
