Customs Court convicts four in gold smuggling case

KARACHI: Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has awarded 11 days imprisonment (already undergone period) and imposed a fine of Rs 300,000 on four suspects when they pleaded guilty in court. The suspects were booked in a case of gold and memory cards smuggling worth Rs 25,485,880.

During the hearing of the case, the investigation officer produced Muhammad Imran, Anila Muhammad Imran, Maheen Patel  (father, mother and daughter) and Muhammad Saleem Garman before the court who moved applications for pleaded guilty and left them on the mercy of the court.

During the hearing, the court framed charge on them who pleaded guilty and left themselves on the mercy of the court. After formalities, the court convicted them to already undergone period and fined them Rs 300,000. In default of the payment of fine, they will undergo further two months simple imprisonment at Central Jail Karachi.

It needs to be mentioned here that three suspects (father, mother and daughter) were arrested from Jinnah International Air Port Karachi and were sent to customs custody on physical remand.

According to the prosecution, on credible information, officials of the customs department intercepted them on Jinnah International Airport Karachi, upon their arrival from Dubai, and recovered gold jewellery 4900 grams valuing Rs27,785,000 and 24500 memory cards valuing Rs27,00,880.

Case was registered for violation of under section 2(s) and 16 of the Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with baggage rules notified vide SRO-666(1)/2006 dated 28/06/2006 further section 3 (iii) of Import & Export (Control) Act 1950.
