Customs Court awards imprisonment to woman booked in currency smuggling case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has awarded nine days imprisonment and Rs 150,000 fine to lady accused Fehmida wife of Muhammad Karim on pleading guilty who was allegedly involved in a case of attempting to smuggle Saudi Riyals 100,000 from Sharjah to Karachi. In default of payment of fine she will further undergo three months simple imprisonment in jail.

During the hearing, the accused lady was produced before the court by investigation officer. Her counsel moved an application for pleading guilty. After the arguments, the court awarded 9 days (already undergone period) and Rs 150,000 fine to her.

According to the prosecution, on credible information, the staff of Customs, Preventive intercepted Fehmida wife of Muhammad Karim and recovered Saudi Riyals 100,000 from her possession. During the search, the lady was asked to produce lawful documents, however, she failed to produce any lawful documents or lawful reason, therefore, said currency were taken into custody and woman was arrested.

Case was registered in violation of section 2 (s) 16 and 139 of the Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (9) & 70 of section 156 (i) ibid read with notification of State Bank of Pakistan.
