Customs Court awards jail term to suspect in currency smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court awarded imprisonment and fine on suspect namely Sami Ullah Shaikh son of Shamuddin, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle foreign currency worth millions of rupees during raid at Jinnah International Airport Karachi

On July 26, 2019 the above mentioned suspect appeared before the court along with his counsel and moved application for plead guilty and left himself on the mercy of the court.

He submits in application that “the accused person committed the offence at the wrong advise and is ashamed on what he has done and undertake no to repeat such a mistake in future, out of seized currency amount which the accused was carrying an amount equivalent to $10,000 permissible and he was entitled to carry the same and as such there was only excess amount of equivalent to $13, 650, due to seizure of the currency the accused had already suffered a lot, the accused also waive his right of trail after seven days of the receipt of copies as provided by section-265C CRPC and place himself at the mercy of this court”.

After the hearing, court awarded imprisonment already undergone and fine Rs300,000 and if fine amount is not paid than he will further suffer for one year in Central Jail

According to the prosecution, on suspicion the passenger was intercepted at the departure of airport and asked him to provide travel documents, after collecting the documents, the staff thoroughly checked his luggage and during the search of his luggage, customs officials found 650 $US dollars, 78, 755 dirham hidden as wrapped in the cloths of the passengers.

Investigation officer further informed the court that suspect was travelling to Dubai through Flydubai Airline and after formalities, customs officials seized said foreign currency and arrested the same.
