Customs Court awards jail term to suspects in liquor smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court awarded imprisonment and fine to seven suspects, who were nominated in a case of attempting to smuggle contraband foreign origin liquor through boat/ launch.

On July 27, 2019, suspects namely Basham, Sakhi Dad, Niaz Ali, Noor Bakhsh, Shah Faisal, Yar Muhammad and Shakir appeared before the court and left themselves on the mercy of the court, after the hearing, court awarded imprisonment for undergone period and fine Rs300,000 each.

If fine amount is not paid than they will suffer further one year in Central Jail Karachi, court ordered.

According to the prosecution on March 13, 2019 the staff of Pakistan Maritime Security Agency intimated to the high-up of Customs Preventive that during patrolling on March 11, 2019 at open sea area, they have apprehended a boat laden with huge quality of foreign origin contraband liquor along with 7 crew members on board of the said boat/ launch.

As per first information report, they were asked to take over the physical possession of the contraband liquors so recovered along with accused persons at the PMSA Headquarters Karachi.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section 2 (s) (15) (16) of the customs act 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the Customs Act, 1969 further read with section 3 (1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
