Customs Court awards seven-day jail to four suspects in smuggling case

KARACHI: Special Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi awarded seven days imprisonment along with Rs 30,000 fine to four suspects involved in smuggling of different items by evading duty/taxes amounting to Rs 1.47 million.

The accused persons namely as Rehmatullah, Habibullah, Raham Ali and Ghulam Sarwar were found guilty of smuggling ladies cloth, engine oil, gutka, etc.

During the hearing, the court asked them whether they are pleaded guilty or want to sue the case on which all the accused pleaded guilty and voluntarily places themselves on the mercy of the court.

On Tuesday, after the confession of the convicts, the special judge counted seven days from when they were arrested as their imprisonment.

According to the FIR, on June 15, 2016, the staff of wing commander, Pakistan Rangers Kushmore intercepted a bus having registration No BSA-222 and informed the staff of Model Customs Collectorate, Sukkur, after fulfillment all legal formalities. The bus was brought to custom office along with four accused persons and recovered smuggled items.

The accused were carrying foreign origin smuggled / non-duty paid said items including ladies cloth, engine oil, gutka pan parag for its alleged sale/distribution in local market and evaded the custom duty and others taxes amounting to Rs 1,470,796. The offence is punishable under Section 156 (1) (89) of the Customs Act, 1969.
