Customs Court convicts suspect involved in mega tax evasion case

KARACHI: The Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi awarded sentence till rising of the court and fine Rs1,00,000 to suspect namely Faisal Aftab son of Aftab Ahmed, who was booked in a mega tax evasion case. If fine is not paid than he shall suffer another two months imprisonment at Central Jail Karachi

During the hearing, counsel for the accused person and customs department completed their arguments and after their arguments, court announced its verdict “I, therefore, keeping in view of reasons and taking the lenient view convict the above mentioned suspect till rising of the court and fine to Rs1,00,000”.

According to the prosecution suspect is involved in mega tax evasion amounting to Rs5,246,249. Court had granted him bail.

Case was registered for violation of section 32 (1), 79, 155 D and 192 of the customs act, 1969 punishable under clauses (9) (14) & (90) of section 156 (1) ibid read with rules 400 & 402 (chapter-XVIII) of the customs rules 2001 notified vide SRO 450 (1)/2001 dated 18/06/2001 further read with section 1 of section 3 of the Import and Export Control Act, 1950 and section 148 of Income Tax Ordinance 2000.
