Customs Court extends physical remand of suspects involved in betel nuts smuggling

KARACHI: The Customs Court Judge on Monday extended the physical remand of suspects namely Yasir son of Shaista Khan and Nasarullah son of Muhammad Alam and sent them back to customs department, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle contraband betel nuts etc.

On Saturday, investigation officer of Anti-Smuggling Organization produced the above mentioned suspects before the court and informed that on a credible information, a team of customs department intercepted a container loaded on Hino Trawler bearing registration number TLS-313 arriving from Quetta via Sukkur near Hawksbay Road, Karachi and diver was signaled to stop the vehicle, but he ignored the signal and accelerated the speed, eventually he was chased and intercepted near a godown of M/s Super Awani Goods, Karachi.

He further informed the court that driver was asked, about the goods stuffed in the container loaded on his vehicle, however, he failed to satisfy the customs team and during the search, customs officials found contraband156 gunny containing betel nuts 13260kgs, 34 gunny bags containing betel nuts 55kilograms total valuing to Rs. 3,570,680, 20 cartons containing Dunhill cigarettes valuing to Rs. 1200,000, 25 cartons containing Raisin valuing to Rs. 250,000 24 cartons containing 100 packets TARA filter Niswar valuing to Rs. 1,680,000, 01 carton Delay Spray with Vitamin-E valuing to Rs. 250,000, 02 cartons Lubricant Gel valuing to Rs. 57,600, 08 cartons Normans Hot 1400 delay gel valuing to Rs. 384,000, 02 cartons Dr. Marton Sun Block valuing to Rs. 87,000 etc.

He argued that after the formalities, customs officials seized above mentioned goods and suspects also were arrested.

He submitted the prosecution further needs investigation from them, therefore, court may send back them to customs lack-up and extend their physical remand, after the hearing, court sent them back to customs department and directed investigation officer to produce them on next date of hearing along with progress report.
