Customs Court extends remand of suspect booked in smuggling of NDP LED TVs

KARACHI: The Customs Court extended physical remand of suspect namely Muhammad Shareef son of Abdul Salam Khan and sent back him to customs lock-up, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 156 Samsung Brand LED TVs and others contraband goods.

On August 1, 28, 2018, during the hearing, Appraising Officer Muhammad Zeeshan Wazir produced the above mentioned suspect before the court and informed that M/s Sagheer Enterprises imported a consignment from Jebel Ali and filed goods declaration for clearance thereof, declaring description of the goods as used auto parts weighing 25000 kilograms at declared/ self-assessed total value of $4,840, on receipt of a credible information, the consignment was selected for joint examination by the staff of PICT examination and R&D section.

He argued that during the search, goods were found inside the container 156 Samsung Brand LED TVs, new genuine auto parts of Japanese, 90 bales of new ladies polyester suiting fabric net weight 4500 kilograms new ac compressors 92 pcs, new batteries etc.

He submitted that during the investigation, it was established that the accused importer Usman, proprietor of M/s Sagheer Enterprises, Lahore, Rahamatullah Quetta and Muhammad Shareef son of Abdul Saleem Khan Kakar, Quetta have deliberately mis-declared description, to get illegal clearance of the banned items under the garb of transshipment cargo, also evading legitimate amount of duties and taxes in the tune of Rs8,323,009.

He requested the court that accused may send back to customs lock-up on physical remand, after the hearing, court accepted his request and extended physical remand, court also directed investigation officer to produce the above mentioned suspect on next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, they have, thus, contravened provision of Section 15, 32, 32 A, 79, 121, 151-1 and 192 of the Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses 9, 14, 14 A, 43, 44, 45, 46, 63, 101 and 86 of section 156 (1) ibid read with allied laws and procedure.
