Customs Court extends remand of 7 suspects involved in betel nuts, prohibited medicines smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court extended physical remand of seven suspects, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid betel nuts and prohibited medicines etc, and sent them back to customs department on physical remand.

On December 12, 2018, investigation officer produced suspects namely Abdul Sattar, Ahmed, Ahmed Ullah, Daro Khan, Abdul Bari and Abdul Baqi before the court and submitted that on actionable information, customs officials intercepted three non-duty paid Toyota Surf jeeps bearing registration no: BF-0150, FB 1429 and BF-2096.

He further submitted that during the search, customs team found 147 PP bags containing betel nuts weighing 3381 kilograms worth Rs899,346; 47 boxes containing 2350 strips of relief tablets (Indian origin) total 23500 tablets and 01 carton containing Penegra tablets (Indian origin) 7520 tablets.

He argued that no documents regarding the lawful importation/purchase/procurement/transportation of the recovered goods were produced by anyone; therefore, all suspects were taken into custody and case was registered.

He submitted that prosecution needs further investigations from them; therefore, court may send back them to physical remand. After hearing, the court sent them back to customs department and directed him to produce them on next date of hearing along with progress report.
