Customs Court extends remand of suspects in smuggling case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has extended physical remand of suspects, Muhammad Tahir and Muhammad Iqbal, and sent them back to the Customs Department. The suspects were booked in a case of smuggled non-duty paid foreign-origin cigarettes, tyres, and other goods worth Rs 175.5 million.

During the hearing, investigation officer informed the court that a team of Customs Department intercepted a passenger bus bearing registration no: BSB-494 en-route from Quetta to Karachi at Moachko Choke RCD, Highway, Karachi and recovered five new tyres “Green Dragon” worth Rs 250,000, two bundles containing 10 tyres “Dunlop Studless” worth Rs 100,000, at least 900 dandas of Pine Light cigarettes worth Rs 630,000, about 400 dandas of Dunhill International London Paris New Yark cigarettes worth Rs 480,000, at least 85 bags containing 4,250 packets 510,000 pouches of one-2-one gutkha packed in UAE worth Rs 10.2 million and 44,550 pouches of Tara filter khaini (niswar) made in India worth Rs 891,000 from the bus.

He submitted that the above mentioned suspects was arrested and case was registered against them and during the investigation and interrogation of accused persons, they also have named other persons involved in the happening whose arrest is essential for proper disposal of case. Furthermore, the exercise of identification of culprits and place of delivery of the smuggled goods will also initiated so that the culprits may be brought in the case.

Investigation officer said that court is therefore prayed that the accused named above may kindly be remanded in customs custody till March 31, 2018, so that the process of identification and pointation may be carried out.

After the hearing, court extended their physical remand for three days and directed investigation officer to produce the above mentioned suspects before the court on next date of hearing along with progress report.
