Customs Court extends remand of suspects involved in smuggling of betel nuts

KARACHI: The Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi extended physical remand of suspects namely Syed Mahmood Khan son of Syed Abdul Alla and Saleem Shah son of Muhammad Rafiq and sent them to customs lack-up, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle betel nuts and other contraband goods.

On Thursday, Iftikhar Hussian Khan, Senior Preventive Officer, ASO/HQ, MCC Preventive produced the above mentioned suspects before the court and informed that above mentioned suspects have been arrested on 25 May 2018 on the charges of smuggling of non-duty paid goods i, 23974 kilograms betel nuts valuing to Rs5,657,864, under the cover load of 500 kilogram Raisin valuing to Rs250,000, 400kgs Pista valuing to Rs480,000 and 6480kgs tamraind (imli) valuing to Rs. 1,296,000, being transported in the container no INKU-288550-5 loaded on Hino truck/ trailer bearing registration number TMD-513, (Lasbella).

He further informed the court that prosecution needs further interrogation from them therefore, court may extend their physical remand and send them back to customs department.

After the hearing, court granted IO’s request and sent them to customs department on physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce them on next date of hearing along with progress report.

According to the prosecution, case was registered by Anti-Smuggling Organization (HQ) NMB Wharf, Karachi against above mentioned accused for violation of under section 2 (s), 156 (2), 157 (2), and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clause 8 & 89 of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 3 (i) of Imports and Export Control Act, 1950.
