Customs Court frames charge against suspect booked in foreign origin cloth smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court framed charge against the suspect namely Abdul Razaq son of Abdullah Jan and issued notices to prosecution witnesses for next date of hearing, suspect was nominated in the first information report for smuggling of jersey cloth printed and non-printed etc worth Rs128, 850,000.

On 2 December 2020, the above mentioned suspect appeared before the court along with his counsel and during the hearing, the court framed charge against him and asked him whether he would plead guilty or not, the suspect claimed not guilty that’s why the court called prosecution witnesses for the next date of hearing.

According to the first information report,  investigation officer of Collectorate of Customs Enforcement & Compliance submitted that an actionable information was received to the effect that considerable quality of smuggled non-duty paid foreign origin cloth has been created in a godown situated at Manda Wali Gali, opposite KMA Girls Degree College, Lyari, Karachi and would like to be removed from that premises shorty.

He further informed that pursuant to the said information a customs team headed by the assistant collector of customs raided said godown and during the search recovered 20,000 kilograms jersey cloth printed and unprinted. 5,000 kg chiffon cloth China origin. 2,500 kg lawn (ladies cloth) China origin & Indonesia. 10,000kg net cloth simple and embroidered China origin and 3,000 kg jeans and dant fabric total valuing of Rs128,850,000.

He stated that after the formalities, customs officials seized the above mentioned goods and first information report also has been registered against claimant owner, financier, abettors, associates and others.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section 2(s) and 178 of customs act, 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (1) clause (8) e of 156 ibid read with section 3(1) of imports & Export Control Act, 1969.
