Customs Court grants bail before arrest to suspect involved in tax evasion

KARACHI: Acting judge of the Customs Court Sohail Akbar has granted interim bail before arrest to a suspect, Muhammad Kamran of M/s Dawn Impex Traders, in Rs 1.27 million tax evasion case.

During the hearing, Aqeel Ahmed advocate filed the bail application and argued that his client was innocent and was falsely implicated in this case. After the arguments, the court granted the bail against surety of Rs 100,000.

The court also issue notices to the Customs Department and the investigation officer for January 16, 2017. According to the prosecution, a case was registered against the suspect on the allegation of mis-declaration of description, quality and PCT of the imported goods aimed at evasion of duty and taxes to the tune of Rs 1.27 million under sections 32 (1), (2) and 32 A read with 79 (1) of the Customs Act 1969 read with section 3, 6, 7A 33 and 34 of the Sales Tax Act 1990 further read with section 148 (1) of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, punishable under clauses (14) & (14A) of section 156 (1) of the Customs Act, 1969.
