Customs Court grants bail to suspect involved in smuggling of cigarettes, gutka

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi granted pre-arrest bail to a suspect, Abdul Hai, who was arrested for attempting to smuggle Indian origin cigarettes and Gutka.

During the hearing, counsel for the accused submitted that the applicant is innocent and has been falsely implicated in this case, therefore court may grant him bail. However, the counsel for the Customs Department argued that prosecution has sufficient evidences; therefore, the court may reject the bail application.  After hearing the arguments, court granted bail to the accused against the surety bonds of Rs 500,000.

According to the prosecution, on credible information customs authorities with the help of Pakistan Rangers and local police raided near Filter Plant Pathan Goth Katchi Abadi, Jamshoro Road, Hyderabad and recovered huge quantity of foreign origin cigarettes and gutka.

After the formalities, customs authorities seized the goods and arrested the above named accused person and case was registered by Anti-Smuggling Organization Hyderabad as violation of under section 2(s), 16 & 157 of the Customs Act, 1969, punishable under clauses (8) & (89) of the section 156 (1) of Customs Act 1969.
