Customs Court grants bail to suspect allegedly involved in tax evasion

KARACHI: Custom Court Judge Faiz Rasool Rashdi has granted the bail to accused namely Mohammad Sadiq son of Sher Mohammad, who was allegedly involved in evasion of duty and taxes of Rs 30.811 million.

During the hearing, counsel for the applicant submitted that the applicant is innocent and has falsely been implicated in this case, therefore, he should be granted bail. However, the counsel for the department argued that the prosecution has provided sufficient evidences against the accused, therefore, his bail application should be rejected.

After the hearing the arguments from both sides, the court granted bail to applicant against the surety bonds of Rs200,000 and observed in its order that ” the role of the present applicant / accused is yet to be determined when the evidence is brought on record during trial. The challan has been filed ,therefore, in my view the present case for further inquiry is made out, accordingly, application of the bail application is admitted “.

According to the prosecution, M/ s Arif Traders, Karachi imported number of consignments of printed empty cartons from China which were cleared availing exemption from payment of duty and taxes under SRO 492 (1) / 2009 on June 03,2009 against furnishing of indemnity bonds/ post dated cheques, equivalent to the amount of duty and taxes.

According to the investigators, the accused is involved in evasion of duty and taxes to the tune of Rs. 30.811 millions.
