Customs Court grants bail to suspect in tax evasion case

KARACHI: Customs Taxation and Anit-Smuggling Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has granted interim pre-arrest bail to suspect namely Nashad Ali Tunio who was booked in a duty and tax evasion case of Rs 5,444,534.

During the hearing, counsel for the accused person appeared before the court and moved a petition for pre-arrest bail. He argued that his client was innocent and was falsely implicated in this case, and that was ready to face trail, however, he had apprehensions of arrest, therefore, the court might grant him bail till final disposal of the case.

After the hearing, the court granted him bail against the surety of Rs 100,000 and issued notices to special prosecutor for customs department and investigation officer, directing them to file their comments. The court also directed accused person to appear before the court on the next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, on a credible information, officials of the customs authorities intercepted smuggled/ non-duty paid Honda Accord Saloon car bearing registration number BFT-418 model 2003, case was registered for violation of under section 2 (s) 32 and 178 of Customs Act 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (89) and 14 of section 156 (i) ibid.
