Customs Court grants bail to suspect involved in mega tax evasion case

KARACHI: Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has granted interim pre-arrest bail to suspect, Narisa Dharani, director of M/s Electro Polymers (Private) Limited who was booked in a mega tax evasion case.

The court also issued notices to special prosecutor for the Customs Department and investigation officer and directed them to file comments on the next date of hearing.

During the hearing, counsel for the accused appeared before the court and moved an application for pre-arrest bail. He argued that his client was innocent and was been falsely implicated in this case, and that the prosecution had no evidence against him. He said that his client was ready to face trail, therefore, the court might grant him bail till final decision of the case.

After the hearing, the court granted bail against the surety bonds of Rs 100,000 and directed him to appear before the court on the next date of hearing.

According to the prosecution, accused is involved in issuance of fake invoices and its output is being used for clearing refund or input tax adjustment by the others registered person and evaded the duty and taxes.

Case was registered for violation of under section 2 (37) 2 (9) 7 (14) (a) 3, 6, 7, 8 (1) (a) & (d) 8a, 22 (1) 23 (1) 25, 26 (1) & 73 of Sales Tax Act 1990 punishable under section 33 (3) (5) (8) (11c) (13) (16) (18) ibid.
