Customs Court grants bail to suspect in whiskey smuggling case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has granted interim pre-arrest bail to suspect namely Naveed son of Ellahi Bukhsh Balouch, who is booked for trying to smuggle 5,400 bottles of foreign origin whisky.

During the hearing, counsel for the accused person appeared before the court and submitted bail application for pre-arrest bail. He argued that his client is innocent and was falsely been implicated in this case, who is ready to face trail, however, he has apprehension of arrest, therefore, the court may grant him bail till final decision of the case.

After his arguments, court granted him bail against the surety of Rs3,00,000 and issued notices to special prosecutor for customs department and investigation officer. Court also directed suspect to appear before the court for confirmation of bail.

According to the prosecution, on a credible information, a team of the customs authority raided a vacant house near Hawks Bay Road Karachi and recovered 5,400 bottles of foreign origin whiskey which was smuggled by the suspect and his accomplices.

A case was registered under section 2 (s) 156 (2) read with section 178 of the Customs Act 1969 punishable under section 156 (1) (89) ibid.
