Customs Court issues NBWs against suspects in smuggling of betel nuts & sweet supari case

KARACHI: The Customs Court approved challan against absconding suspects namely Muhammad Amin, Khan Nawab, Malik Abdul Ghani and Hussain, who were allegedly involved in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid Crushed betel nuts etc.

On 25 March 2020, investigation officer submitted charge sheet against the above mentioned suspects and informed that on information, customs officials intercepted an Isuzu truck/ trawler bearing registration number TLF-045 loaded container no AUCU-501561-2 and during the search, customs team found 964 PP bags of crushed 33,725 kg betel nuts worth Rs26,980,000. 1012 PP bags containing crushed betel nuts 35,425 kg valuing of Rs28,340,000. 199 cartons containing assorted brand Special Sweet Supari total weight 6765 kg valuing of Rs5,412,000. 3116 PP bags containing Sweet Supari total weight 109,060 kg valuing of Rs87,248,000, 70 bottles of un-hygienic sweetener in liquid form valuing of Rs 140,000.

He further submitted that after the formalities, customs officials lodged first information report against the above mentioned suspects, after the hearing, court approved charge sheet against issued non bail-able warrants against them.

According to the prosecution, case was registered by Preventive Officer of Customs House Karachi for violation of under section 2(s) 157 (2) of customs act, 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the customs act, 1969.
