Customs Court seeks final challan against suspects involved in betel nuts, cigarettes smuggling

KARACHI: The Customs Court directed investigation officer to complete investigations and submit final challan against suspects namely Rizwan Khan, Zeb Khan, Junaid Memon, Meer Ahmed, Mirza Khan and others, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid betel nuts, cigarettes etc.

On December 24, 2018, investigation officer of Customs Preventive appeared before the court and sought further time to complete investigations and submit final challan. After the hearing, court accepted his request and extended bail of suspects who are on bail in this case.

According to the prosecution, on an actionable information, Customs Preventive team raided at KBX Railway Dry Port, Karachi and recovered 4275 kilogram betel nuts, 150 dandas L&M cigarettes made in Switzerland 450 dandas (long package) Davidoff Light cigarettes (Genoya), 300 dandas Davidoff White cigarettes (Germany), 100 dandas Benson & Hedges cigarettes (London), 50 dandas MOND Super Slim Filter Cogarettes, Green Apple & Cherry, 1500 packets of Safina brand Indian origin gutka and 500 packets One-2-One gutka (packed in UAE) total worth Rs5,666,250.

Case was registered against them for violation of under Section 2 (s) 156 (2), and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under Clauses 8 & 89 of Section 156(1) ibid read with Section 3 (1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
