Customs Court seeks final challan in Rs 137m tax evasion case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has directed the customs investigation officer to submit a final challan and complete the proceeding to declare Mohammad Shoukat Memon involved in a case of mis-declaration as proclaimed offender. Memon allegedly caused a loss of Rs 137 million to the national kitty.

During the hearing, under trail prisoner Muhammad Adil Ashraf was produced in custody by jail authority where Investigation Officer Muhammad Azam Nafees requested for some time to file final challan. After hearing, the court directed the investigation officer to complete the investigation and file final challan on or before date of hearing. He also was directed to file report of proclamation under section 88 C.r.p.c through assistant commissioner concern. Muhammad Adil Ashraf was sent to Central Jail Karachi with direction to the superintendent to produce him in court on August 20, 2016.

It needs to be mentioned here that on last date of hearing, the court had directed the investigation officer to start the proceeding of proclamation against the absconder accused Muhammad Shoukat Memon and seizing his movable and unmovable properties.

According to the prosecution, crime no ST/AD-A/2014-15/27 under Section 2 ( 37 ) of the Sales Tax Act, 1990 punishable 33  ( 3 ) ( 5 ) ( 8 ) ( 11C ) (13 ) (18 ) ibid dated 02/04/2016 was registered against the accused M Adil Ashraf, Muhammad Shoukat Memon & others.
