Customs Court seeks final charge-sheet in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court directed investigation officer to submit final charge-sheet against suspects namely Syed Muhammad Shafiq son of Khuda Nazar and Syed Aziz Ullah son of Syed Abdul Sattar, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 11,794 kg betel nuts.

On August 13, 2018, Investigation Officer Muhammad Mehmood and Naib Subedar of Pakistan Coast Guards appeared before the court and sought time to submit final charge-sheet.

They submitted that on credible information, officials of the Pakistan Coast Guards intercepted a Hino truck bearing registration number TLG-919 and during the search, the officials recovered 11,794 kilogram betel nuts from truck.

He submitted that on the spot, officials asked them to produce legal documents, however, they failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after the formalities, the said goods and truck were taken into custody.

According to the prosecution, case was registered against the above mentioned suspects for violation of under Section 2 (s) and 16, 156 (1) (8) (89) and 157 of the Customs Act, 1969.
